3rd Grade

Third grade with Ms. Brianna and Ms. Erin is filled with learning games, songs, science experiments, differentiated reading stations, and more as we seek to review foundational concepts while growing mastery in new concepts.

A day in third grade includes instruction in math (Saxon Math 3), reading (All About Reading Level 4), spelling (All About Spelling Level 4), grammar (Shurley English Level 3), United States geography, science, poetry/memory work, music, art, and a devotional time focused on building character that reflects Christ in our daily interactions.

Third grade teachers will assign lessons in each of these subjects to be completed at home, along with additional assignments in handwriting and logic.

In math, students will review previously taught math concepts while also learning new concepts through small group/partner work, learning games, manipulatives, songs, and more. We work to find a balance of memorizing math facts and creating a deeper understanding of more abstract math concepts.

In reading and spelling, third grade students begin transitioning from “learning to read” to “reading to learn” as reading levels and phonological awareness increase. Reading is taught using multi-sensory strategies within differentiated reading groups that teach spelling patterns, common phonogram rules and rule breakers, comprehension, vocabulary, and elements of text.

Shurley English guides our grammar instruction as our students use jingles and repetitive practice to master new parts of speech while reviewing those previously learned, grammar rules, sentence structure, and complete paragraph formation.

United States geography instruction includes a tour of all 50 states with a dedicated day to learn about the history and culture of each individual state. Geography in third grade is a combination of hands-on experiences, food tasting, and learning games as we explore our country.

Third grade at OldSchool incorporates many hands-on approaches to achieve mastery in a variety of subject areas while having fun and growing in Christ!
